三品京官王大常有個癡傻的兒子名叫元豐，二十五歲尚未成親。一日，有位婦人帶著氣質脫俗的女兒小翠至王府拜訪，說是想把女兒安頓下來，兩位夫人就這樣談成了婚事。小翠見元豐相當投緣，夫妻倆感情和睦，拋球、唱戲，形影不離。王府斜對面住著一位王給諫，處處找王大常的麻煩，小翠運用她的聰明才智，多次為王家化解危機，免於殺身之禍，還治好了元豐的癡病。直到最後王大常才恍然大悟，原來小翠是他十八年前在古廟遇見的女孩……。

本片取材自《聊齋志異》同名小說，是導演廖祥雄自美國取得碩士學位返國後，與中影公司合作的第一部作品，也是翁倩玉回國主演的第一部電影。雖是出自通俗的劇本，但廖導演靈巧的調度、明快的剪輯以及穿插其中極為風格化的角色和場景，為古裝片增添了童話般的趣味性。《小翠》完成後，廖祥雄的導演生涯發展順利，片約不斷，屢創佳績。

Wang Da-chang has a mentally-challenged son Yuan-feng, who's 25 years old but without a wife. One day, a woman brings her elegant daughter Hsiao-tsui to visit and proposes matrimony between the two families. The couple is fond of each other and begins a happy married life. With her wisdom, Hsiao-tsui resolves multiple crises caused by Wang's troublesome neighbor, and cures Yuan-feng's mental illness. In the end, Wang Da-chang realizes that Hsiao-tsui was in fact, the little girl whom he met 18 years ago at the old temple….

Adapted from the novel Strange Tales from the Liaozhai Studio, this film is the first collaboration between director Liao Hsiang-hsiung and Central Motion Picture Corporation after he returned from the U.S. with a Master's degree. With his unique directorial approach, Liao added whimsical elements to the melodrama. After completing the film, Liao continued his successful career as a director and shot many films. The screenings are in loving memory of director Liao, who passed away on April 2, 2022.
