1990年代初，各以《悲情城市》和《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》揚名國際的侯孝賢與楊德昌，不僅共寫臺灣新電影尾聲的輝煌，更分別展開創作生涯的新篇章。侯孝賢以《戲夢人生》持續追索本土的文化記憶；楊德昌則在臺北拍攝都會喜劇《獨立時代》，思考儒家思維與西化浪潮的碰撞。

是枝裕和從戰後歷史脈絡出發，爬梳時代洪流對兩人的影響，亦從庶民視角捕捉廟口放映及西門紅樓電影院的風景，勾勒本地觀影文化的縱深。楊德昌一身勁裝、談笑自如的年輕風采，以及他在幕後與演員親暱互動的身影，為臺灣影史留下彌足珍貴的片段。
