Dance artist Kirstie Simson is widely renowned as a leading light in the art of dance improvisation. Through her art form Kirstie shares her story of dealing with a life-threatening health crisis: cancer, and its recurrence. Traversing movement and text, she conveys the underlying philosophies that have emerged through the embodied practices which have supported her to face, and engage with, life’s challenges.
‘When life is good there is a thrilling sense of freedom that calls to be fully engaged with, and joyfully expressed. When difficulties emerge, as they inevitably will, and the path forward seems perilous, the work begins in earnest and our understanding and grounding in holistic practice is put to the test. Emotionally this is not pleasing for us; yet it is where the profound satisfaction of humble learning, deepening understanding and strengthening occurs. Life inevitably will present us with challenges. Where did we get the idea that it should be easy? The good news is that as an integral part of the whole, we have everything at hand to be able to adapt, transform, uncover, and explore life-generating solutions, that are so much needed at this time.’
Subterranéa explores our resilience in the face of adversity, how we make sense of life through telling our stories, and Kirstie’s experience of the intersection between her health crisis & the planetary crisis we are collectively facing.

Ku & Dancers was founded in 1993 by choreographer Ming-Shen Ku, with a mission to create and present contemporary dance works. The company has performed extensively across Taiwan, Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and various parts of Europe. Since its inception, Ku & Dancers has been a leading force in promoting improvisational dance and Contact Improvisation in Taiwan, establishing itself as the country’s only professional dance company dedicated to this form of performance.
The company’s exploration of improvisation began in 1992 with its debut work I Was a Choreographer. In 1998, Ku & Dancers premiered the large-scale structured improvisation piece View Hunting, which marked a new direction in its artistic journey. The 2000 production Dance, Motion, Picture brought performances into galleries and museums throughout Taiwan, expanding the company’s audience by engaging with non-traditional performance spaces.
In September 2010, the acclaimed improvisational work Decode 2010 was performed in Taipei and Kaohsiung to enthusiastic responses, earning a nomination for the 9th Taishin Arts Award in the Performing Arts category. In 2011, Ku & Dancers initiated the first i·dance Taipei, a biennial international festival of improvisation dance, featuring 13 events over 9 days with over 30 artists from 11 countries. This groundbreaking festival also received a nomination for the 10th Taishin Arts Award.
To mark its 20th anniversary in 2012, the company produced Voltar, securing its third Taishin nomination. In 2016, Sadhu, commissioned by the National Theater and Concert Hall, premiered at the National Theater. The work unfolded a dreamlike, prophetic narrative in search of a release from deep-seated anxiety. Most recently, in 2024, Ku & Dancers premiered Gradation, a cross-disciplinary production that merged digital art and museum spaces, garnering the company’s fourth nomination at the 23rd Taishin Arts Award (Season 4).
