國共內戰尾聲，患難與共的門栓與得勝以假身分隨軍撤到臺灣。白色恐怖的亂世變數連綿，兩人數度落難。門栓在逃亡中遇見寡婦月香和新生兒耀華，他假冒成孩子的父親，以借來的文憑顛沛求職過活。盛產香蕉的寶島上演著非天堂式的荒誕與荒涼，那些借來的多重身分竟也不知不覺陪伴了一輩子……。 這是王童書寫庶民生活「臺灣近代三部曲」的第二部，以黑色幽默述說外省人漂移臺灣的流離處境與身分認同。
In 1949, during the Chinese Civil War, kindred friends Door Latch and Te-sheng faked their identities and retreated to Taiwan. Threatened by white terror, the two brothers led a rocky life, constantly fleeing from capture. One day, Door Latch meets a widow Yueh-hsiang and her newborn baby Yao-hua, then pretends to be the deceased husband of Yueh-hsiang to find a job and live with them. Unexpected happenings continue on the island abundant with bananas; they are forced to live with a borrowed and fake life.
