This lecture begins with an overview of artist Chen Tianzhuo’s creative context and his cross- disciplinary practices that combine video, dance, sound, and installation, then continues with his long- term exploration of physical, ceremonial, and sensory boundaries. In addition, the traditional whaling heritage of the Indonesian village of Lamalera is presented, with its associated history, beliefs, and lifestyles, to illustrate how this community’s unique survival and cultural systems have been shaped under specific environmental and historical conditions.
Through dialogue, the speakers guide audience members through the juxtaposition of artistic creation and cultural context. By sharing their field study experience for and the narrative sources of Ocean Cage, they demonstrate how this work responds to the intersection of and tension between different knowledge systems within a contemporary art context.
